Source of Ganges (Gangotri - Gaumukh - Bhojwasa) trek is a rewarding and popular trek in Garhwal Himalayas. In this trek, Gaumukh glacier is 30 km in length and 4 km in width and second largest glacier in India, first one being Siachen. This trek is not only opportunity to camp at the foot of Himalayan peaks but also gives you experience to crossing the massive Gaumukh glacier and Source of Holy River Ganga and Gangotari temple. This trek gives you opportunity to see the Shivling, Sudrshan, Bhagirathi sisters, Meru and Kharchkund peaks. The Gaumukh is open for visitors and trekkers from May to Oct and Gangotari National Park remains closed during winters due to heavy snowfall. Here you will see the origin of the holy river Ganga.
Ganga is also called The Ganges and second largest river on the Indian subcontinent by discharge and nurtures the entire north India. It is a trans-boundary river of Asia, flows through the Bangladesh and India and rises in western Himalaya in Uttarakhand, India and empties in the Bay of Bengal. It is the heart of the Indian culture, tradition and living but ranked as the fifth most polluted river of the world in 2007. Now government taking several action plans to clean the Ganga.
Gangotari is situated at an altitude of 3048 m above the sea level and a place from where the Bhagirathi River descends. It is one of the sacred Char Dham of Uttarakhand. It is the source of the Bhagirathi also called Ganga before its confluence with Alaknanda River at Devprayag. Ganga is the life line to millions of Indians who depends on it for their daily needs and most sacred River to Hindu religion. The source of Ganga is at Gaumukh on the Gangotari glacier and many other peaks. This single trek will give the adventure and experience of more than one trek.
DAY 01 : DEHRADUN – HARSIL
We will start drive to Harsil from Dehardun at early in the morning via Uttarkashi. We will stay overnight at guesthouse or camping in Harsil.
DAY 02 : HARSIL - GANGOTRI (3048MTS) – BHOJWASSA (3792MTS)
Next day we will start drive to Gangotri from Harsil and further trek to Bhojwassa from Gangotri via Chirbasa (3600mt). Today’s entire trek will be passes along the roaring Bhagirathi River. Beyond Chirbasa the terrain becomes desolate and referred to as Artic Tundra by many trekkers. From Chirbasa we start trek to Bhojwassa and the entire trail will be pass through the dense forest. There is a small temple and a potential campsite near down the river in the Bhojbasa. Afternoon we will explore the area and enjoy excellent sunset on Bhagirathi group of peaks. We will stay overnight in tents.
DAY 03 : BHOJWASSA - GOMUKH (3890MTS) - TAPOVAN (4463MTS)
On the next day, we start trek to Gomukh (3890mt), the source of the Ganges and further trek to Tapovan. Tapovan is a finest high altitude alpine meadow in the area. Today´s trek is ascent steep and as we climb, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer. This is a place chosen by many Sadhus and Saints for extended meditation during the long summer month. We will stay overnight in tents in Tapovan.
DAY 04 : TAPOVAN (4463MTS)
The whole day will be spending at Tapovan to relax and enjoy the magnificent snow clapped peaks, free to acclimatize and flora & Fauna and mountain landscape. We will stay overnight in tents in Tapovan.
DAY 05 : TAPOVAN – BHOJWASSA
Early in the morning after enjoy the sunrise on high peaks we start trek down to Bhojbasa. After reaching down to Bhojbasa we will camp and stay overnight in Bhojbasa.
DAY 06 : BHOJWASSA – GANGOTRI
Early in the morning after breakfast we trek down to Gangotri and we will stay overnight at the guesthouse.
DAY 07 : GANGOTRI – DEHRADUN
On the day seven, we start drive to Dehradun from Gangotri and arrive at Dehradun by nightfall. This will be the end of a beautiful and memorable trip. After reaching Dehradun you can start your further journey.
