Har Ki Dun is one of the India’s very best hiking trails and this trek happens to be on the bucket list of travellers and hikers all around the world. The phrase ‘Har Ki Dun’ literally translates to ‘Valley of Gods’ named after its beauty and ancient culture. This valley is a cradle shaped one sitting at about 12,000 feet over sea level in Garhwal Himalayas. It’s a two way trail starting from a small mountain village called Taluka at 7,000 feet and goes up towards Har Ki Dun passing through some of the very remote Himalayan villages that are rich in their ancient culture dating back to the Mahabharata era. Osla, the village where we will be staying the night on days three and five of our trip has one of the very few temples dedicated to Duryodhana from Mahabharata. The people was built by the people of this valley who still worship the Kauravas as their ancestors. It is believed that on the death of their king, Duryodhana, these people cried their eyes out and the river called ‘Tamas’ or ‘Karmanashini’ was formed out of their tears!
Wild Himalayan cannabis plants are found in abundance in and around Osla and one might see one of the local elders smoking cannabis using a traditional ‘Chillum’. This valley is blessed with several natural elements and every picture you click here is sure to look like a desktop wallpaper. At night, if the sky is clear, one can clearly see our Milky Way galaxy in all its glory and this might be a good time to get the tripod out to capture some stunning astro-photographs and night time-lapses.
