Description

Milam Glacier is located in the tehsil of Munsiyari, Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India. It is about 15 kilometres (9 m) northeast of Nanda Devi at an altitude from about 5,500 metres (18,000 ft) to about 3,870 metres (12,700 ft) at its snout. This trek is a gateway to explore the mystiques of Himalayas Uttarakhand. It was closed in year 1962 and inaccessible for trekkers and reopened in the year 1994. Milam Glacier is suitable to visit from mid of March to May. There is menace of landslides and roadblocks in the monsoon. The trek for Milam Glacier starts from Munsiyari and it is situated on the south facing slope of the Himalayan range. It covers around 37 km2 and 16 km long

Milam Glacier is one of the remotest and largest glaciers of Kumaon Uttarakhand. It originates from the eastern slope of Trishuli (7,065mts) and the slope of Kohli peaks. The trek of Milam Glacier follows villages, chunks of ice, forests, waterfalls and wooden bridges and very long, tiring and adventurous. It is the source of the Gori Ganga River which is an important tributary of Kali River. The trail to Milam Glacier goes through the hills, along with the Gori Ganga River and rugged terrains and gives very beautiful views of picturesque streams, villages, snow laden Himalayas and waterfalls and also offers panoramic vistas of mountains, varied flora and fauna, friendly people and green landscapes.

In the east it is fed by glaciers from Nanda Gond (6,315 meters) and Nanda Pal (6,306 meters). The village Munsiyari lies near the snout of the Milam glacier and further down the Gori Ganga valley is the footstall for trek to the glacier. It is one of the best treks in this region. The trail and views of this glacier is very beautiful and adventures.

Itinerary

DAY 01 : KATHGODAM – MUNSYARI [DISTANCE DRIVE- 340 KM TIME- 10 HRS]

First day we start drive from Kathgodam to Munsyari. It is situated on the south facing slope of the Himalayan range that is 60 km beyond to Munsyari. We reach Munsyari by the evening which is a famous hill station. We stay overnight in Munsyari.

DAY 02 : MUNSYARI – LILAM [ DISTANCE- 14 KM / TIME- 6 HRS / ALTITUDE- 1850 METERS LILAM ]

We start drive to seolikote from where we start trek to Lilam which is situated at altitude of 1850 m. Before Lilam, there is a steep climb to reach Lilam. We stay overnight in Lilam.

DAY 03 : LILAM – BUGUDIYAR [ DISTANCE- 2-3 KM / TIME- 5 HRS / ALTITUDE- 2500 METERS BUGUDIYAR ]

The trail to Bugudiyar has some ups and downs with increasing altitude. The trail is mixture of forest and fields. Bugudiyar is at an altitude of 2500 m above the sea level. We stay overnight in Bugudiyar.

DAY 04 : BUGUDIYAR – RAILKOT [ DISTANCE- 12 KM / TIME- 5-6 HRS / ALTITUDE- 3130 METERS RAILKOT ]

The trail passes through the granite rock faces, mule bridges, frozen ice stream and a steep ascent. Railkot is situated at an altitude of 3130 m above the sea level. We stay overnight in RAILKOT.

DAY 05 : RAILKOT - MILAM VILLAGE [ DISTANCE- 16 KM / TIME- 7 HRS / ALTITUDE- 3420 METERS MILAM VILLAGE ]

We start trek to Martoli from Railkot. Martoli is a place between Railkot and Milam Village at an altitude of 3430 m above the sea level. The trail goes to Milam Village over a wooden bridge from Martoli. Milam Village is situated at an altitude of 3420 meters above the sea level. We stay overnight in Milam Village.

DAY 06 : MILAM VILLAGE - MILAM GLACIER - MILAM VILLAGE [ DISTANCE- 6 KM / TIME- 2 HRS / ALTITUDE- 3438 METERS MILAM GLACIER ]

On the next day, we start a 3 km trail to Milam Glacier from Milam Village which passes through the rugged terrains. Where we can see snow laden Himalayan peaks. Milam Glacier is situated at an altitude of 3438 meters above the sea level. We will come back to the Milam Village and stay overnight in Milam Village.

DAY 07 : MILAM VILLAGE – MARTOLI

The trail start to come back and we will return to Martoli from the Milam Village. Martoli is a scenic place and it was the part of ancient silk route of Tibet in ancient times..

DAY 08 : MARTOLI – LILAM

We will enjoy gradually descending trek from Martoli to Lilam from 2500 m to 1850 m above the sea level.

DAY 09 : LILAM - MUNSIYARI – BAGESWAR

We will continue the trek and finally reach the Bageswar. We will enjoy the beautiful views during the trek.

DAY 10 : BAGESWAR – KATHGODAM

Drive back to Kathgodam from the Bageswar and carry back the memorable moments with us. This will the memorable end of the trip and you feel a change in yourself and you will love more to nature.
